Does anyone know if human growth hormone cause increased body hair. I have never heard anything about it doing so but wonder if anyone else has.

I saw an ad for human growth hormone (HGH) in oral form and it made me wonder. Something tells me this is not the real thing as it only costs $49 but who knows for sure? I thought it had to be taken by injection to be effective.

This ad in the Healthy Living catalog just made me wonder if any other bodybuilding supplements caused unwanted hair growth.

Anabolic steroids, which I have never used were linked either to excess body hair or premature baldness, or both, I can't remember which.

I don't know if HGH has any effect on hair growth or not...my daughter has to have daily injections due to a growth hormone deficiency and I have never noticed any increase or decrease in her hair growth. Also, my understanding is that HGH is ineffective when taken orally because it is too sensitive to survive the digestion process. I also tend to think that this couldn't be the "real thing" either because of the price...one teeny, tiny vial costs us several hundreds of dollars. The HGH has to be injected directly into the body and also must remain refrigerated at all times prior to injection. My point is that it is really sensitive stuff and it's quite expensive...

Hope that helps. [Smile]

RJC2001,

You may have been looking at a homeopathic formulation of HGH which contains very little actual HGH and it may be rHGH, or synthetic HGH. Homeopathic formulations proport to be very effective even though they only contain trace amounts of the active ingredient.

Or you may have been looking at a product containing amino acids and other supplements that are intended to increase your own body's natural production of HGH. Both types of products usually cost around $50 - $75 for a month's supply. Search the internet for information on these items or check out any well-stocked health or vitamin store.

Patrick, you are right on target. The fine print says "homeopathic." The active ingredient is listed as USP Recombinant human growth hormone 6C + 100C + 200C. You were right on the price too - $49.95. It also makes the claim of "clinically proven."

There are a lot of herbal and homeopathic scam products that mimic legitimate ones. You can find ads for "herbal Viagra" or "homeopathic estogens," which are no substitute for the controlled doasge and efficacy of established products.

As far as real HGH affecting hair growth, any product that affects hormonal systems has the potential to cause an increase or decrease in the amount and rate of hair growth. I'm not aware of any published data on HGH specifically, but it's possible, even likely.

I was wondering about hormones in general.

So it's just not only androgens and testosterone that can possibly cause excess hair growth?

Is cortisone considered a hormone? I know prednisone has exess body hair growth listed as a side effect.

All sorts of hormones have been shown to affect body hair.

Cortisone is a steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal glands. It has a range of functions, including the reduction of inflammation in joints. It has also been demonstrated to stimulate hair regrowth in patients with alopecia areata. It is usually injected for this treatment, but topical creams are also sometimes effective. As with any product affecting hair growth, the mechanism is not understood, and effectiveness cannot be predicted or guaranteed.

Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone taken orally. Prednisone can cause a darkening and/or increase in hair growth. This effect disappears when the dose of Prednisone is decreased. As with any product affecting hair growth, the mechanism is not understood, and effectiveness cannot be predicted or guaranteed.

Anabolic steroids will definitely cause hair darkening and/or growth on women. My understanding is all humans have hair, but it becomes an issue when male sex hormones (ie. Testosterone) stimulate it to become dark and thick. Adult women also make testosterone, but much less than men. However, if they inject it for the purpose of developing the type of upper body muscle men can, then they might well also develop darker, and thicker body hair. I would guess that most female bodybuilders shave most of their body, whereas average women only have dark and thick hair on their lower legs and pits (pubes too, of course). Obviously this is an overgeneralisation, but women taking steroids will definitely need to shave more. I doubt steroids impact a man's body hair very much, as men generate enough natural testosterone to darken most of their body hair anyhow. I have not personally noticed any difference whatsoever.
