I am a 22 year old male and have a lot of excess body hair. I was wondering if it may be due to hormonal problems as my father isn't hairy. Is there any oral medication available and would it be worth approaching my GP with this problem. The hair is really getting me down. I've been receiving plasmalite treatment but the results are slow and the treatment expensive.

If there is medication available are there any negative side effects and how effective would it be?

any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi matty, while it's possible you have a hormonal imbalance, it's pretty rare. Usually hair is a genetic trait, and you can't necessarily look at relatives to determine your own hairyness.

The problem with hormones (specifically androgen blockers used to reduce hair), is that they have unwanted side effects in males. These can include loss of sexual function, sterility, breast growth, etc. Most men are not going to want these side effects to deal with hair. [Eek!]
