babba,
You should definitely see an endocrinologist who deals with hirsutism.
I've suffered with this same problem for many years and have just recently gone off of spironolactone (after 20 years - my endo felt my hormone levels had been suppressed long enough, we'll see how it goes) but am still taking the birth control pill.
My hormone levels were in the normal range, no PCOS, problem is that my hair follicles are more sensitive to androgens.
Have your doctors tested your homones? Acne and hirsutism can be symptoms of PCOS.
Also, while the excess hair may be hereditary, the underlying cause of it may be an inherited hormonal condition.
Good luck.

Hi:
The reason why doctors don't want to prescribe spironolactone/aldactone is since it will harm fetal developement in male children if you became pregnant. If you had a birth defect in your child, then they would be liable since they prescribed it for you.

I use Spiro and I never went to the doctor. There is an online pharmacy I can recommend that's really inexpensive, but I am not sure if I can post the link here. If you want to you can PM me.

Please keep that information private.
After all, with the legal climate in the US, we don't want to tempt fate. As G. Gordon Liddey says, "When I was a kid breaking the law required premeditation, determination and in many cases some amounts of malace. Now, one breaks the law on a daily basis and does not even know it."
