I'm a male with these two options available for treating dark coarse hair on the neck, back, and shoulders. (I already know about risks of induced growth for these areas, that's not what this question is about)

I've been searching through the forums a lot but I haven't found a lot of info about good settings for type IV skin on adjustable pulse alex lasers like the new GentleLASE PRO or even the GentleMAX. I'm type IV (middle eastern, light brown) and I know that 16j 18mm on a GentleLASE (which has a fixed 3ms pulse) would not be safe. But I'm wondering if those settings might be attainable if the pulse was raised on the new GentleLASE PRO machine. The only thing is I don't know how high it would have to be raised to compensate for the high joules to avoid burning...20ms? 40ms?

The second part of my question is, assuming it would be possible to do what I've just said, is this route any better than just going with the GentleYAG? I know somewhere I read Romeo mention that an adjustable pulse alexandrite laser (like the GentleLASE PRO) could be good for type IV, such as Mediterranean skin, for example. But elsewhere I really haven't seen this discussed. Any thoughts around this?

Androby, I do not like talking about settings on Forums, however, just to help you out a little, a 20 ms pulse width on the Gentlelase Pro or even the GENTLEMAX would help. Then, the tech can try settings that will not hurt your skin ( 12 - 16 Joules )

Thank you Chris, that's very helpful.
Do you have any idea how a GentleYAG @ 3ms might compare to the GentleLASE PRO @ 20ms in terms of their effectiveness on finer hair? Is one clearly better than the other in your mind or do you think these two options might have similar results on finer hair in the end?

Your thread specifies that you have dark coarse hair. Start with the settings as per my recommendation and we can evaluate as your treatments progress. Alex wavelength of course is better for fine thin hair than yag wavelengths.

Ok, will do. I'll talk to them and see what settings they are willing to try.

To be honest when it comes to settings, you can talk about them but what the clinic will actually do is an entirely different thing. I had found a place that used the Apogee Elite MPX I guess a year or more ago and was super excited as the Apogee Elite is my favourite machine. After going for treatments though, she used low settings and always insisted on using the Yag on me even though I'm type 3 and have had many many treatments with the alex, and even GentleLASE at high settings. She also told me hair doesn't need to shed for the treatment to work, and when using the yag I wouldn't feel ANYTHING and of course had no shedding. Trying to get her to go higher was like I was telling her to fire the laser on the same area 5 times in a row. She acted like I was absurd so I never went back. Just something to remember.
