Anyone go to a non-derm doctor for LHR?

I’m writing a story for Glamour about how many doctors are getting into the cosmetic industry, even though they aren’t board-certified dermatologists or plastic surgeons - for instance, many OB/GYNs are adding laser hair removal to their practice, or medspas are frequently run by a doctor who is board certified in family medicine or emergency medicine. They typically go to weekend courses to learn how to operate lasers/botox/etc.

Has anyone gone to one of these MDs for treatment and had complications? Email me at [email protected].

Thanks for your time.

Most states don’t require one to be an MD to perform LHR, and it’s definitely not necessary to be good at it. Doctors and others learn the exact same way, through classes etc that are completely outside their medical school curriculum. In fact, since doctors have more important things they are qualified to do, laser operators who perform LHR multiple times a day every day are much more knowledgeable on it.

If you are really writing an article for Glamour, then send me your contact information via private message and we should talk. I’ve been involved with regulatory issues in Laser Hair Removal in Texas since 2000 and have spearheaded our so far somewhat successful challenge to the attempt by dermatologists and plastic surgeons to limit laser hair removal to themselves. I am also the current president of the state trade association and I am one of the initial members of an initiative to form a national trade association. I would be happy to provide you with background and counterpoint to what is often misleading information from many sources. I have an agenda as does every one else, but I am up front about it:

Laser Hair Removal is an industry that should be open to anyone willing to pursue the educational and experience requirements necessary to safely provide the service. There is a role for physicians but it is not a direct role in providing the treatments.

And this is coming from a physician who has been immersed in this industry (probably more than any physician) since it started.

I am also President of the New York State association of Laser Hair Removal Specialists and deal with Legislative issues in New York State. I share SSLR’s views and if you wish to contact me, I can also inform you about what is going on in New York State.

I hope both of you have sent this person an email. I’m not sure she’s checking back on this thread as she provided her email address. And I know both of your opinions wouldbe invaluable in that article.
