my questions about LHR + photo

hi i’d like to get LSR done on my back, shoulders and chest.
here are my questions;

  1. is a bigger(18mm) spot size alexandrite machine more effective than the other ones with smaller(15mm) spot size?

  2. for thin hair, is Diode long pulse laser more effective then alexandrite?

  3. i have recently been exposed to sun and got tanned neck(see pic below). only for the tanned area is Nd:Yag better? or its better to wait a few weeks and get alexandrite done?

  4. i was told by a LHR centre that only uses alexandrite laser that only the upper part of my back hair would go away. see pic; (apparently anything below the drawn line wouldnt go away because the hair were too thin, that i needed electrolysis for that area), true?

  1. do the latest laser machine perform better in killing the hair than last years models? for ex is the “Apogee 5500 - Alexandrite - Cynosure” a good one?

i guess that i have skin type III or IV by the way.

thank you very much

I can’t see the photo…

Same here.

fixed;

Can’t say for sure from a photo but looking at the photo I would call you a skin type II, not a III or IV.

I don’t think skin color is the same think as skin type. Some people have fair skin that tan easily.

hairmair,

If you live near a skilled, modern electrologist with decent speed and good tools, this hair will permanently be removed within a year to 15 months, if you stay on a good schedule. Many people parrot and describe electrolysis as being very slow. This is very untrue if you find an electrologist that has a whole new mindset and strategy concerning working on large areas.

A computerized epilator allows for better speed and it’s deadly to hair, too. I do a lot of men’s backs that are far, far worse than your one area and I know what is possible. Laser induced hair growth can be a problem for this area.

The larger the spot size, the more effectivce the treatment and I can say that from experience. The GentleLASE would be a good laser, which is the only Alexanderlite with a 18mm spot size. The Cynosure 5500 is not a bad laser, it has a 15mm spot size and the capability to go down to 5ms which is not bad. So if the GentleLASE isn’t available in your area that wouldn’t be a bad choice.

Wait until your tan has faded if you decide to go for laser treatment, the Alexanderlite is much more effective and tanned skin cannot have high settings used on it, even with the YAG as the melanin particles are “excited” so make the skin far more photo sensitive.

Benji

My opinion:

  • Only the top portion is really coarse enough for laser. The rest needs electrolysis

  • Larger spot size is more effective.

  • Alexandrite is more effective on coarse and on finer hair than the diode

  • I also think you’re a type II-III or so, so alexandrite would be best

  • Wait till your tan fades and use sunscreen throughout the treatments to keep the area light. It doesn’t make sense to be treated with a less effective laser if you can avoid it.

You are right they are not the same. And in fact, the Fitzpatrick scale is really not appropriate for laser treatments because the potential for damage to the skin is based on the amount of melanin actually present, not the propensity to tan.

ok thank you very much everybody.
i thought diode laser was more effective on finer hair than alexandrite.
and thanks dfahey, but i want lsr on other parts as well. i cant go though electrolysis for all my body.

ok, so the GentleLASE alexandrite laser is the best on the market at the moment. i found a few centres with the GentleLASE machine and one of them already quoted me about 50% more than what i expected to pay($800 per session) with the Apogee 5500. havent called the others yet. i’ll do tomorrow.
but if others are all expensive too, is really worth paying much more to get it done with the latest technology machine laser machine?

and regarding the bottom part(from the drawn line) of my back, if no laser machine can kill finer hair, is it still worth trying to kill them or not to touch them at all? because i read on the FAQ that in rare cases treating fine hair could cause hair wroth on other ares.

thanks again

  • clinics negotiate
  • prices usually don’t depend on the type of machine they use
  • go to Candela Corporation website and run a provider search using your zip code to find more clinics with GentleLASE

hi,
i understand that the price doesnt depend on the type of machine they use but i’ve only managed to find a dozen LHR centres here in istanbul having the gentleLASE machine. and the centres having them somehow ask for more money than the reputable centre using Apogee 5500 i first intended to go which ask for around $800 per session.

im ready to pay more if the 18mm spot size works better in killing the hair than the 15mm. my question is, is it really worth paying more?

thanks in advance

Hairmair , try Mona Lisa Laser ( www.monalisalaser.com ) in Akatlar, Istanbul. They use the Light Age LPX Alexandrite laser, as well as the Cynosure Apogee Elite Laser. They are quite reputable and we have sent our customers to them and they have sent their customers to us as well. Their pricing for full back should be cheaper than $ 800.00 ( By the way, we have a relationship with them )

The most important thing is their experience. If you are certain of the expertise of the clinic with Apogee 5500, then the 15mm spot size will do the job just fine. The most important thing is them knowing how to use the machine to get the best results for you. Btw, the advantage is also a 3ms vs 5ms pulse of the GentleLASE. It’s not just the spot size.

Either way, just make sure to go to the clinic that you feel is most knowledgeable.

thanks romeo, i did phone up monalisa centre but their prices seemed much higher than the average market price($800 for full body)

ok lagirl, i’ll do a good research on the remaining centres and will ask about who will perform the session and his/her experience.

by the way, some centres say that a test session to see if there is any reaction on my skin is not required!? shall i still get it just in case?

thanks again

it’s not necessary. However, it may help you to ask what settings they’re planning to use on you (joules, spot size and pulse) once you start.

yes but i dont understand anything about the settings they will perform on me! shall i ask exactly what settings they’ll use and post it here to make sure nothing will go wrong?

Yes, please ask for them and post here so we can tell you if they may be too low for example.
