Normal Redness or Burns?

I just had my first laser treatment on my lower legs yesterday. I’m very pale and have medium brown hair and the laser used was Gentlelase with 20joules/18mm. It was very painful and I have red circles all over my legs that are exactly the same size as the laser. I took a picture put it didn’t come out right. There’s a Star Trek episode where a creature uses suckers to suck the salt out of people leaving red circles on them. It looks like that.

It feels like a sunburn. In my opinion, it looks like a first degree burn. Is that normal? If it is then I won’t worry about it and continue having it done.

In my case the red circles heal very soon, maybe in a few days.
I have a similar question; Today I had a treatment and this time I saw something new. There are balck circles on a few places of my skin. I scratched one of the circles and saw a white layer underneath it. Is it ok if I scratch the dead skin?

Melissa500, most skin manifestions fade with time. How much time? It’s different for each situation because there are so many variables involved. You can use some aloe vera gel to help things along and perhaps you should call the technician and report this so they can give you some reassurance and advice.

rezaf, I would not touch any newly healing area. You don’t want interfer with the body’s healing process. Call you laser place as well and let them comment on the few black circles that are present today. Let us know what they say…

Melissa, it sounds like you have some superficial burning. Those are max settings and probably shouldn’t have been used on your first time even if you think you’re light enough as it seems that you’re not. Please buy some pure aloe vera gel (clear stuff), cool it in the fridge, and apply a few times a day. Either way, definitely go back to the clinic and show them what happened. They need to know and they should be able to help you - possibly provide a burn cream. These things resolve themselves, but may take a while. Don’t have any more treatments until they do.

Rezaf, it sounds like you’re getting burned as well. You should tell your clinic. This shouldn’t be happening. It means they need to adjust the settings and they need to know about it.

Well, I went back to the spa and the nurse(laser tech) said it was normal redness and that it happened because I’m so pale. She said the same thing happens to her. She said she’ll use a lower setting next time and see how that feels. Hopefully, next time will be a little better. I’d hate to give up on LHR.

If it doesn’t go away within a day or two, it’s not normal. If you see crusting or any other side effect resembling a burn, you were burned. And it’s not because you’re too light. That’s actually good for laser. It’s because the settings were too high.
