Am I getting unnecessarily fried by electrolysis??

Well here’s my story…I’ve had maybe over 30-50 laser treatments over a the last few years for my facial hair to no avail…so I finally decided to switch to electrolysis…

I started just over a month and I’ve had 5 treatments so far mostly hour long sessions…shes been treating my entire face pretty much…my cheeks, my chin, my sides even some nasty ones growing down my neck…shes been using the blend method or so I’ve been told…I know it’s slower but heard its been proven to be more permanent that’s why I went that route…

So my last treatment she treated me and because I have a high pain tolerance due to all of those laser treatements she turned up the current even more…she said the higher the better because she said she usually turns it down for the finer ones but since I could handle the pain she didn’t…I was very red and bumpy the day after and now I have little bumps and scabs all over my face…and they take about two weeks to fully go away…Is this normal? And is she going about this right? And wondering how many hairs per hour are typically treated with blend because after the treatments only about 1/4 of the hairs about are actually treated?

There is one school of thought that says you select a treatment protocol like this:
Find out what the person’s pain tolerance is, and then turn it up a notch.

I personally disagree with this, as the pain tolerance of the client has nothing to do with the energy level that will correctly treat the hair or hairs in question.

Good treatment means you find out what energy level is needed to remove the hairs and then make adjustments to that, if needed, to make the client as comfortable as possible.

It would be my opinion (not that my opinion means all that much on this subject… its just an argument I have been having for years with many people) that she crossed the line from the required energy level, and went into the needlessly higher levels. You won’t get any better hair removal from this (unless her insertions are so bad that the extra power is needed to overcompensate for lack of insertion skill) but you will have longer healing time, and possibly short term healing manifestations like scabs, or temporary brown spots.

That’s all I am going to say about that.

As for the numbers question, see the previously discussed topic:

Allow me to be perfectly blunt and not be as polite as James - No, this NOT NORMAL and I would stop. Did you sample other electrologists in your area? Please try to do this. Blend is a great modality, but if she were trained to do the faster forms of electrolysis, microflash or picoflash thermolysis, you can get get cleared and stay cleared, skin reaction would minimal and time to completion would be about the same as blend, if not faster. There’s a better way to do this.

Express your concerns to her and ask her to turn it down or do something else to get the hair off without this kind of skin reaction. Overtreating the hair follicle beyond what is needed is forbidden! ELectrolysis should not equal pain, scabbing, etc., that lasts for two weeks.

No I haven’t sampled different electrologists but I did call around to a few places to ask what method of electrolysis they used…and she was the only one in my area that did the blend method which I wanted to try…

It’s been about a week since my last treatment and I still have scabbing and a bit bumpy with dark discoloration at some insertion points…When she first started my treatments I know she was using a much lower current because I would have minimal scabbing and swelling compared to now…so maybe I’ll tell her to turn it down just a notch…

And I’m a little hesitant to try thermolysis because it might not be as permanent seeing how many laser treatments I’ve had and it all grew back…

If I do decide to switch to Thermolysis or at least try it…What would I ask them when I call?..I don’t really understand what microflash and picoflash are…Is that the method being used or the type of machine?

And this site is great!..very resourceful…so I finally decided to sign up…Keep up the good work!
