Black or African hair

Hi all - sorry to begin with so many questions, but my head is spinning.

I am a black/African woman with a lot (!) of facial hair (A LOT - I spend 30 minutes each day plucking!). Are there special things my electrologist should have to know before he begins work on me?

I am moving in a few months to an unknown destination (my company say it’s either Clovis, NM or Fort Morgan, CO), and I imagine that electrologists in these areas may never have dealt with black hair before. Is there something I can tell them to make my life easier?

Also, I already have hyperpigmentation from plucking so much - will this go away once I get all the hair removed?

Finally, am I likely to get keloids?

Hello JulianneDavis. Welcome to the party that is HairTell.com!

If you think that is a lot of questions to start out, you have just proved yourself a newbie here

Taking your questions out of order:

No, you should not get Keloids. If her insertions are good, and her probes clean it is not an issue. You are more likely to get them from dirty buzz clippers, or dirty/reused razors than electrolysis.

Yes, permanent hair removal is the best thing you can do to rid youself of hyperpigmentation, as you will be removing the source of the irritation, and that will allow the skin to finally heal, unmolested by future hair growth (and ongoing plucking)

It is hard to tell someone how to work on you. It is a little like hiring a plumber and then asking him if he plans on soldering pipes, using compound and plastics, or shark-bite fittings, and then trying to tell him how YOU would do it if YOU were doing the job. He will say, well, if you want to do it, why did you call me?

There are some things that can be suggested however. If your hair is curly, blend would be the best thing to start off with. More time consuming and expensive, but in the case of someone with little experience working with this situation, a better value for the time and money spent, to say nothing of the skin condition after treatment. Later, when your hairs straighten out, you will be able to switch to thermolysis and get really fast effective treatments.

You can also have your practitoner call me for some one on one shop talk. That would probably be the best option. We would be talking as one car mechanic to another. We would even use the big words we don’t use when talking on here. We might even use Electrolysis Gang Signs. East Coast Flashers Representing, Yeah-Boy!
