Hi, I am an electrologist and i have never done the buttocks before. I have a client who had laser hair removal done on the buttocks area and after having done laser she was not happy with results, she feels it has made the area treated worse, now she wants to remove them with electrolysis. Can someone please give me any hints as what is the best way to position the client are the insertion of the probe exactly the same way as you would do any other area . Please please if anyone has removed hair from this area I would like as many hints as possible. Thanks
Buttocks are like any other area. The hair is no less tough here as it is on most areas. Most hairs are in the resting stage, so be prepared to see a lot of shallow, white, resistant bulbs. Adjust your timing and energy as needed. Try a little more timing instead of intensity and see what happens for those resistant hairs.
Positioning depends a lot on your body type and type of chair you use to sit on. If you are short, you may need the client to lay slightly on their side facing away from you. If you are taller, prone position may suffice. I start from the outside and move toward center line of the body. If the client wants you to remove hair as far as possible into the butt crack, then ask them to help you with the stretching. Always keep the client as close as possible to you so as to protect your back. Magnification that allows a working distance of 13"-16" is desirable, thus that is why James and I harp a lot on electrologists investing in quality, customized magnification. For those difficult areas and long appointments, you need to think about your body mechanics all the time or you will fizzle out.
If I think of something else, I’ll come back. Too bad the laser could not reduce most of that hair, but who knows the specifics of why on this individual client. Electrolysis will get 'em!

I’m guessing this client is female and the hair treated was not coarse enough for laser and shouldn’t have been treated with laser in the first place. That’s too bad.
The position of the client:
For you to be left-handed, you just do the opposite.
To treat the right buttock, the best position is horizontal abdominal position (prone).
To the left buttock, which takes the customer as the fetal position.
Ihanks for all your replies.
Just unsure when you say the prone position is this when the client is laying on their front and i would have to sort of lean over client to do the right buttocks.
Depilacionelectr you mension the fetal position can you describe this, because my understanding is the client will lay on their side with legs drawn into chest. Is this correct?
Sorry i am asking these questions i just like to make sure i understand it perfectly.
THanks again
Depens on the person also I have them in what would be described fetal position but also for short periods on their front with good cushioning for support.
Yes Milli, the client is placed in a fetal position because with bent knees, the skin on his right buttock that would be more stretched with legs extended. This will facilitate a little the work.
Most of the follicles in the area, have a direction making a right angle( 90º) with respect to you. It is ideal for your shoulders do not suffer more than just necessary. You can support your elbows on the bed and take the appropriate subject.
It is difficult to explain this. Tomorrow I’ll do a drawing and you’ll understand better.
I’m guessing it would help to wax once before treatment so all hairs are in anagen?
It’s fine when my clients wax prior to electrolysis for CERTAIN AREAS, but it certainly is not necessary as all hairs can be treated no matter what. I fall on the side of liking to treat anagen hairs, but there are some electrologists that may not totally agree with me. That’s okay. Shaving would be highly acceptable, too.
I also want to say that a more gradual fetal position is what I find to be the best for the client. A true fetal position would be hard to maintain for the client for the amount of time I need to work on that area. Besides, some have abdominal girths so large that there is no way that thye can get in to a real fetal position. Laying on one’s side with the knees gently bent works for me. Prone means to lay on ones tummy looking down and the opposite is supine, meaning on ones back looking up towards the clouds. :tired:
Left lateral decubitus or position English or more gradual fetal position.
In the case of censorship remove this drawing, which is about the lack of artistic brushstrokes and not the obscenity of the image.
Thankyou all so so so much. I now have the right idea. This forum is awesome. It is so nice to know that I am not alone as an electrologist and I have other electrologist who are able to help me. Thankyou again
Hi I am back again i wanted to ask dfahey or anyone who can help can you recommend any brand or a place to purchase magnification with a working distance of 13"- 16"
Thanks
I use Carl Zeiss loupes. Most electrolysis supply companies stock them, Instantron or Texas Electrolysis Co.
I have tried Carl Zeiss loupes. I did not find them comfortable because of the narrow field of view and also could not get use to focusing with them
Here is what I use.
What I like about the stereo microscope systems, like the zeiss Opmi 99 is t hat the working distance is variable, once you focus it, the armature stays in place, so you can move your head, and come back to the view still in focus (as long as your client has not moved as well) and the field of view/vision is relative to the magnification you sellect, which is also variable. When you ware working on a leg, and need minimal magnification, you have a large field of view, and low magnification, when you need big magnification (20x’s normal and above) the field of view is smaller, but much larger magnification. You see only about 2 square inches of skin then.
It does take a little getting used to, but if one practices closing one’s eyes, and holding out a finger, and then touching that finger with the same finger on the other hand, with the eyes closed, working this way gets easier.
James has the best. I may be going the direction of the Zeiss Opmi someday. I did get to use James’s set up and it is very nice indeed!
James, so the sterio microscope system is this something you wear on the face or is it a microscope on a stand because when I google sterio microscope system zeiss Opmi99 i get images of the microscope system on a stand.
It is a microscope on a stand. I have one as well, though it is not as nice as James’ OPMI, it is still light years ahead of the circle lamps that are commonly used.
