I believe that in order to buy EMLA, you need a doctor’s prescription.
In the United States, yes, you do need a prescription. Go to google and search for ‘EMLA where to purchase’. Canada is the place. Instructions for use are available if you do a search, as well. Here’s a sample. There are many.
I feel the need to caution hairtell posters and lurkers that anesthetics like EMLA should be used only with the guidance of a physician. I’m beginning to feel uneasy for anyone who feels they can smear this stuff thickly over a large area, occlude it for 1 or 2 hours without their physician being involved. So please approach this correctly with expert advice before hand. Covering large areas like sections of the back could result in overdosing and mild to severe side effects.

To measure 1 gram of EMLA, the Cream should be gently squeezed out of the tube as a narrow strip that is 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) long and 0.2 inches (5 mm) wide. The strip of EMLA cream should be contained within the lines of the diagram shown below. The diagram did not show up here, so draw a strip 1.5" X 0.2" so you can see what a 1 gram dose looks like.
