Does hair have to be grown out for electrolysis?

I’m 18, fair skinned, and started growing some fine, dark brown hairs on my upper lip in middle school. I also have very light blonde/almost clear, fine hair on my chin and face. Lately, I have had 3 or 4 black, coarse hairs popping up in random places on the underside of my chin. Last year, to my dismay, I started growing fine, dark brown hair on my stomach and in my cleavage. I don’t know what I’m going to do this summer! I’m most embarrassed by my upper lip. I feel like a freak sometimes. My mom also grows dark brown hair on her upper lip and chin but nowhere else.

I tried laser treatment once a month at an American Laser Center. They had me “shaving” (more like clipping with this trimmer thing) which has ended up being the worst thing I could have done in my opinion. After my paid year was over I gave up on laser because I was seeing hardly any results.

I started electroylsis once a week for over a month (5-6 weeks). I was actually seeing some results, slowly but surely. My skin was only irritated for a few hours after the treatment and maybe into the next morning once in awhile. Then I was told I could start going every other week. I did that 2 or 3 times but then had to stop for awhile for financial reasons. It was $45 for 20-25 minutes. I want to start again, but the electrologist told me I needed to grow out my hair for at least 2 days before coming, 5+ was preferable. It was almost painful going 2 days without shaving my upper lip. It looks much worse growing in then it did when I just had some fine, brown hair. I wish I had gone to electrolysis first, but I wasn’t smart enough to look into it after multiple people telling me it hurt terribly and caused scarring. It hurts less than the laser!

Anyway, just any advice in general? Is it necessary to grow the hair out? The electrologist said it’s necessary to avoid killing all the necessary blonde, clear hairs that help cover wrinkles in the future.

The problem is that in future the hair is not going to be like now.

The blond hair become more visible and then you will not like.
Do not look back and continue with your treatment of Electrolysis to the extent that your economic possibilities allow. You are very young and have a lifetime to enjoy the hair-free skin as you want. Treat hair is an advantage because now you can do it in small doses. If you wait for new hairs are stimulated, you will need to invest more time and money.
Courage and let´s go on forth, you’ve taken the right path.

She’s right. I wish I would have known about electrolysis when I was your age. I could have tackled it in smaller doses and mown a few more lawns! Just keep it at bay as your pocketbook allows. Find a less expensive practitioner. But just be sure to use one that keeps your skin looking so good with little reaction, as you’ve described.

Oh, and the hair doesn’t have to be grown out very far. Just enough for some tweezers to grab onto it, and also to see the general direction of growth.
