Hi everyone!
I’m a South Asian female getting electrolysis done in Toronto.
This thread is to document my experiences with electrolysis.
I’ve decided to go back to permanent hair removal after a period of 10 years. This time, I’m better informed, thanks to Hairtell and my electrologist’s blog.
Details about my skin type and hair:
Ethnicity: South Asian
Complexion: Dark (by Western standards); I wear NC45 / NARS Syracuse (I think - I need to confirm the shade)
Hair type: coarse, thick, many ingrowns
Other issues: scabs, hyperpigmentation, skin looks damaged
Areas being done: Neck (to begin with); chin and jaw; upper lip, lower lip; between eyes (the dreaded monobrow!)
My electrolysis plan:
I intend to begin with weekly appointments, as the area I want to start on has coarse / thick / long hair with a lot of ingrowns.
By the three month mark, I hope to dial this back to bi-weekly appointments.
I will go for 45 mins - 1.5 hours (usually 45 mins) , till I achieve total clearance (I have been informed this will take about 6 months).
After that, depending on time and money availability, I will go about once per month.
Dec 9th 2014:
Tonight was my first appointment; it was for 45 minutes.
I have chosen to do my electrolysis with Follikill (www.follikill.com). I will try to link to the thread I will be adding to soon regarding my review.
I had thermolysis done; my electrologist explained that this would be faster than blend.
She also believes that blend may have been what I had had done originally, when I had electrolysis done in 2004-2005.
I was prepared for the pain involved in electrolysis, so this was not a surprise to me. My pain threshold is low; thus, experience may vary.
My experience was what my physiotherapist calls a ‘stabbing pain’. I experienced a dull, but stabby-like pain when my neck was being done; a shallower sensation on my chin.
I am experiencing swelling restricted to the areas where electrolysis was done; it is localized to where hair was actually removed.
My skin was sensitive, but not painful, after. My skin felt a bit warm, but was not burning. I felt well enough after my appointment to drive. In all, this appointment seems to have gone well.
As I was the last appointment of the day, she was willing to talk to me about how long I would have to get electrolysis done.
It looks like the long haul; 18 months before I can be called ‘done’.
Second session
1 week after first.
Date: 16th Dec 2014
Summary: OWWwwwww
Duration: 1.5 hours
Cost: $125
This session was done during my period, so the sensation may have been intensified.
I listened to meditation tapes during my session, so that helped.
At first glance, it would appear that the neck has been cleared substantially, if not fully.
Edit: I think a full clearance of the neck has been done today (well, as full a clearance as can be done - there’s so much hair! However, I don’t notice any dark coarse hair on the neck.)
Also, for reference, post #113151 on this link:
What is clearance
defines what a clearance is.
Also, a couple of hairs have been removed between the brows.
She didn’t remove the hair in the dark patch on the left lip area :(.
Next appointment will have to be in Jan.
