is electrologist plucking my hairs?

Hi–I’m a female getting electrolysis on my upper and lower lip and chin, and have been getting electrolysis for about 9 months now. I like the electrologist I go to a lot – she does flash thermolysis, and the currents are usually long and I can feel the hairs “sliding” out most of the time as opposed to her plucking them. I go for 45 minute sessions, A few of the times when she is not in though, her partner works on me, and I always feel like it’s not being done right–she uses much shorter currents and it feels like she’s plucking all the hairs–she goes through them MUCH faster and it doesn’t hurt as much (which isn’t bad, I just feel that maybe the current doesn’t do the job – although she uses my other electrologist’s chart to check what currents to use). It definitely feels like plucking, and she has been working on me more often recently because my other electrologist isn’t available as often–I’m always worried after having sessions with her that even though I feel like she got rid of much more hairs, that it’s only a “quick fix” if she’s just plucking them, and that they are going to grow back worse. If my other electrologist doesn’t come back as often, it’s kind of hard for me to switch places because I am going to college in the fall and will only be able to go back for electrolysis sessions during breaks.

Will the hair grow back worse if she is plucking – should I be worried that these currents are shorter and it feels like she’s just carelessly plucking the hairs out very rapidly? She is still a very nice person, so I feel bad telling her I am feeling a plucking feeling, as I am worried I would insult her.

If anyone has any insight on what the plucking might do, or how to fix this, that would be great. Thank you!!

You should really look for the feel of plucking and hair not sliding out without resistance. If that’s what’s happening, you need to address the issue and only get treated by someone who does it properly.

Are there no electrologists near your school?

There are some listed online about 45 minutes from my school, but I won’t have a car when I’m there and I’m not sure how I could get transportation there. Maybe I will make a separate post here asking for electrologist recommendations in the area I will be in.

If I have this other electrologist again next time, I guess I should just cancel my appointments and start bleaching? I guess this would be better in the long run than continuing to go to her?

Speak up! Tell one or both of them that you prefer #1’s treatments. An unskilled/undertrained/misinformed electrologist will never change bad habits unless he/she is called out on it. This applies to many things in life!

I also think they should give you notice in advance that your regular electrologist will be absent. You should be given the chance to reschedule if you choose. If an emergency situation arises, then that’s understandable, but for it to happen more often, unacceptable. I’m sure they would not be happy to go to a scheduled appointment with their favorite hair stylist, only to find a substitute holding those shears.

I would ask them both why one persons treatment is so different from the others.

Ask if they will both use the same settings. Do they put your treatments on a chart? They could see what the other person is using and treat you with the same settings.

Maybe the second electrologist would be willing to use the settings that you preferred electrologist has established. If not then let them both know you want to only schedule with the one person. You are paying for treatments and if you like one over the other let them know that.

Both using the same settings would not render the same results if they are not inserting the same way. Trust me on this one. If you are finding one’s treatments to be hitting the spot better than the other, you are best off arranging to see that one only, until and unless they work together to share treatment skills.

As someone who has done some training, I can tell you that this is easier said than done.

They seem to be using the same settings, because electrologist #2 always brings in my chart, but it just feels much different. Thanks everyone for all the help – I will just have to be assertive and tell them I prefer electrologist #1s treatments.

And that shouldn’t be a problem at all. I went to an office with 3 electrologists and told them I only wanted to be booked with one of them (the owner). They sometimes offered others when mine was out of town, but I preferred to wait.
