More show & tell

The girl in the photo has a lot of fine dark hair on her lower back. In the center you see the tiny crusts from 3 days ago (40 minutes) and the inflamation, immediately after today’s 60 minutes. She will need another 45 minutes. (Photo shows the remaining hair, treatment 3 days ago, and today’s treatment.)

So about 3 hours for the first clearing, about 1.5 hours for the second (in 2 - 3 months) and about 45 minutes for the final. Total treatment time will be: 5 - 6 hours. Treatment will not exceed 6 hours. (Crusts: these are the appropriate size for the body, for the face crusts should be, and can be, avoided.)

GREAT work, Michael. Electrolysis is the only option for this girl. I love working in this area. We almost do not need to tighten the skin. The results here are easily predictable and I allow myself the freedom to predict that you will need less time than you have estimated for the second clearance.

Last Friday I worked in the same area in a young man. I use the multiplex system. I used 0.1 s of thermolysis (60%) followed by a single pulse of 0.001 s Flash 99%, he tolerated the treatment well, but could have been perfect if Lola had been there.

Impeccable,it is great having your images too.

So you’re saying after 6 hours of total treatment she’s hair free? Wow.

The 6 hour is my guarantee. She pay no more after that. This is not an unusual TTT (total treatment time), and it’s fairly standard in the industry. Most therepists, however, don’t often take the time to compute their TTT. But this is, after all, what patients want.

Hang on until the end of these treatments so you can all see how accurate I have been in the estimate. I have been very lax in photo-documentation in the last few years. Early on, I documented everybody. I just tossed out 2,000+ slides of patients (who looks at slides any more?).

I would love to be able to do this…but…

…what about that 18 year old girl, who comes in at the beginning of her upper lip growth? I remove those slightly accelerated vellus hairs, but over the spring I notice heavier accelerated vellus (albeit, not many). Earlier clients with similar hair growth may have needed ten 10 minute treatments, but her hair was in the throes of change. Is she going to have a little hair or a lot of hair in the big picture?

Or the middle aged woman who carries excess weight and grows hair like crazy, then loses weight and has very little growth, then gains weight and grows hair? Or the woman who “WAS” tweezing her chin, starts treatment and after 9 months of weekly treatments finally admits that she is still tweezing between treatments?

The few clients I’ve had who did their lower back didn’t do it all in one year. They had sporadic treatments, sometimes waiting a year or more between clearings. A recent one that comes to mind came in recently and had only 3 or 4 longer hairs in the area. One that worked consistently until she was done had so many areas done at one time that I didn’t track how many minutes for each area - I simply listed the areas treated each time.

I would LOVE to give my clients “TTT”…estimated or actual…but there are so many variables. How do I solve this?

I have to agree. There are too many variables to give an exact time. General estimates is as close as I will come.

Very nice work, Mike, by the way. Thanks for the picture.

This girl’s hair is a lot like my own- fine & dark. I can’t wait to see her progress! I plan on doing this area in the future.

Very easy. In most cases, removing all the hair on upper lip (visible and invisible) will allow us to foresee any possible change. The electrologist should have the necessary knowledge to inform the client of any change. And I know you have them spare, Barbara. The key is to adequately inform the customer when we evaluate the case before starting treatment. With 25 years every young woman has already developed most of the hairs in any area of the body (except the belly). In the underarm, for example, the perimeter will not increase.

I do many cases of underarms and bikini on girls from 15 years onwards (their mothers are anxious to eliminate this problem to their daughters as they did before.) I always warn that the perimeter of the underarm increase in oval circles and we need to touch up the area around the area removed. They are not surprised when this happens and so are ready for the “touch-ups to come.” The predictions never fail. The women’s hormone-dependent areas are the face, neck and breasts, the rest is fairly predictable. The man is different, the time necessary to remove the beard and neck can be predicted because all follicles have developed terminal hair. Except in the shoulders, back and ear the other areas are predictable, that is, never will be surprises.

For all those with long experience. But the first years are hard: first of all, there is a large increase in speed as well as inefficiancy (hopefully). Secondly, we all need some time in order to gain enough experience and self confidence to our abilities. It simply takes some years in order to finish enough clients.

Or intense (paid) mentoring.

Pictures are worth so many words! That is why I always enjoy browsing through depilacionelectr’s posts. This always gives me a better idea what to expect. Thank you for posting this!

Dear Beate, Trust in yourself comes when you check your level of true regrowth. It’s a matter of doing a little test in someone who is always close (a relative or friend). Choose an area that has not been touched for many months (arm, for example) produces a 4 X 4 cm2 template and save it for future sessions. Removes ALL the hairs on the inside of that square (all). Takes note of the time invested. Wait 3 months and replace the template in the same area. Work back all the hair inside the square. I bet my right hand that you do not need more than 25% of the time spent for the first time. This will give you the confidence you need. In the chapter “Regrowth” of Michael’s book, you can see the appearance of hair regrowth that come from true regrowth and you can correct your mistakes if you have them. I think not.

Take photo of the area provided before the session. I promise that this test will be the opening shot of a long list of clients. Forget the hair phase, focus on treating all the hairs in the square.

(By the way, I really like your picture too)

Interesting picture. I have a question that probably has been answered quite a lot.

An area that has been completely cleared, how many % can one expect to be completely killed?

It looks like I will have my first electrolysis this week on facial hair. The hair I will have treated is untouched hair on my cheekbones and a bit of my beard.Nose as well.

I wish there was a FAQ.
